The summit’s main topic concerned the development of Africa’s infrastructure, but its participants focused mainly on the pan-African idea of the United States of Africa. The biggest advocator of this idea, Libyan President Moamer Gadafi, was elected in Addis Ababa to a one-year presidential mandate over the AU, replacing Tanzanian President Kikwete.
UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon, who participated in the summit’s opening session, supported his main guideline – the building of Africa’s infrastructure, considering it a prerequisite for the further economic development of the continent.
African leaders agreed that significant progress has been made since the last summit in solving the numerous political, economic, and health care issues, pointing out that the unity of the African states and their infrastructural interconnectedness are the key elements of and preconditions for Africa’s further progress and prosperity.
