Croatia re-elected to OPCW Executive Council

At the 18th annual conference of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) members states held 2-6 December 2013 in The Hague, Croatia was re-elected as a member of the Executive Council

At the 18^th annual conference of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) members states held 2-6 December 2013 in The Hague, Croatia was re-elected as a member of the Executive Council for a two-year term (2014 to 2016) at the proposal of the Eastern European Group. The term begins in May 2014.

The Croatian delegation at the conference is being led by Permanent Representative to the OPCW Vesela Mrđen Korać, who underlined Croatia’s commitment to the organisation’s goals, confirmed also by President Ivo Josipović during his visit to the OPCW in October. Throughout the years, Croatia has been actively cooperating and supporting the organisation’s activities through bilateral and regional programmes. Apart from organizing seminars and workshops, Croatia has also hosted a regional meeting of the Eastern European Group 25 member states’ national commission and organized a workshop for customs officials. The Petrokemija chemical company continued to train representatives of third countries on the functioning of modern chemical plants with an emphasis on security and protection. This year, OPCW inspectors have examined Croatian industrial facilities. Croatia has expressed willingness to continue to actively participate in and support the organization’s goals and activities, and will consider the possibility of supporting the Joint OPCW-UN Mission to eliminate Syrian chemical weapons.

The OPCW has 190 member states, while its Executive Council consists of 41 member states – 16 permanent and the rest elected annually at the proposal of regional groups. The conference confirmed the new four-year term of the current Director-General Ahmet Üzümcü, who received unanimous support from all regional groups.
