On 1 April 2019, Croatia marked the 10th anniversary since it joined the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO).

NATO is the strongest military and political alliance of today, numbering 29 full-fledged member states from North America and Europe. Its fundamental goal is to guarantee freedom and security to its member states through political and military means, and if necessary through collective defence. As a victim of military aggression in the 1990s, Croatia is especially appreciative of the importance of collective security and stability that NATO provides.

Transatlantic relations between the North American and European member states form the basis of NATO, and are even more vital today, in times of security challenges such as terrorism, illegal immigration, hybrid threats and WMDs.

Croatia has been recognized as a credible and reliable partner of the Alliance, participating in a number of operations and missions, from Kosovo, Iraq, Libya, Afghanistan, Lithuania and Poland to the Mediterranean.

By supporting the strengthening of security and stability in Europe’s southeast and remaining committed to NATO’s “open door” policy, Croatia welcomes North Macedonia’s accession to NATO.
