Commemoration of UN Day, marking 62nd anniversary of UN Charter

The commemoration of the UN Day, 24 October 2007, also marks the 62nd anniversary of the coming into effect of the UN Charter, the fundamental act of this international organisation, proclaiming the maintenance of peace and security, development of friendly relations based on the respect for equality and self-determination, as well as co-operation in solving global issues

The present-day global challenges of political, security, economic, social and humanitarian nature know no state boundaries and require a joint and co-ordinated action and solutions on the part of the international community. The UN activities in preserving and building world peace and security, the process of global disarmament, stimulating a balanced economic and social development, promoting the protection of human rights and fundamental freedom, as well as the preservation of cultural and biological diversity, are a proof of its dedication to a dialogue that should exclude no-one.

Participating in the activities initiated and conducted by the UN is one of the pivotal parts of Croatia’s foreign policy. Croatia occupies a prominent position within the UN, continually strengthening its international position, while the crown of its co-operation with the UN, as well as the efforts put forth in developing democracy, peace and stability in the world, is surely its election as a non-permanent UN Security Council member for the 2008-2009 period.

Although global challenges have changed significantly since the inception of the UN, its basic goal remains the same – to establish trust and friendly relations based on the principle of equality between all nations of the world.
