Within the regular political consultations, Assistant Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Hrvoje Marušić met with Alejandro Abelláno Garcia de Diego, Director General for Coordination of Common Policies of the EU at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of the Kingdom of Spain, and talked with him about our bilateral relations and new forms of cooperation considering Croatia's EU membership now, as well as the meeting of the European Council on 27 and 28 June and the priorities of Lithuanian presidency, EU enlargement policy in regard of Southeast-European countries, the European Neighbourhood policy and Multiannual Financial Framework of the EU.

Both officials agreed that this meeting, too, confirmed the very good relations between Croatia and Spain considering that these are the first political consultations after Croatia's accession to full EU membership, and this is actually Spain's welcome to Croatia. Also, the attendance of Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría Antón, Deputy Prime Minister, Spokesperson for the Spanish government and Minister in the Cabinet of the Kingdom of Spain, and State Undersecretary of the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Rafael Mendívila Peydro, of the celebration of Croatia's accession additionally confirm that Spain sees Croatia as a partner in the EU. Director General Abellán stressed the need to focus on possible areas of joint action, pointing out the Mediterranean where Croatia is a key partner to Spain. They also mentioned the possibility for Spain to take part in the twinning projects in the Republic of Croatia in consulting, justice, infrastructure, environmental protection, high-speed trains etc. Both sides confirmed it was necessary to encourage economic relations where we could jointly appear in third states through joint ventures.
