Permanent Representative of the Republic of Croatia to the UN in New York, Ambassador Vladimir Drobnjak, was elected 20 November as Chairman of the UN Disarmament Commission after unanimous endorsement by the Eastern European Group.

The UN Disarmament Commission is a subsidiary body of the General Assembly established though Resolution S-10/2 at a special session in 1978. Its task is to provide recommendations to the Assembly in the area of disarmament and identify measures that need to be taken to that end. The Commission has an advisory role and reaches all decisions by consensus.

It meets annually in three-year cycles, with its substantive sessions held every April. On its work and adopted conclusions it submits annual reports to the General Assembly in the form of resolutions adopted at the First Committee.

Drobnjak is to chair the Disarmament Commission in 2014. Its substantive session will be held between 7 and 25 April 2014.
