On Saturday, 8 September 2012, the second day of the informal meeting of European Union Foreign Ministers on Cypress in which Croatia participated as an upcoming member, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Vesna Pusić stated that Syria was the main to

“We are discussing the stance the EU will take in discussions to be held on this issue at the UN General Assembly later this month,” stated Minister Pusić. She commented that there are differing ideas about how to approach this issue, “given that Syria is on the very threshold of the European Union” and that the countries of the Mediterranean are “potential countries for immigration”.

For the time being, according to Minister Pusić, the EU is developing its position based on the military, political and humanitarian aspects of the crisis in Syria.

The meeting in Cypress is chaired by the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Catherine Ashton.

On the day prior to the meeting, Paris and Rome warned that the failure of the international community to overcome the crisis in Syria would seriously threaten security in Europe.
