In his speech to the present parties, Minister Jandroković pointed out the significance of this meeting as yet another example of the international community’s firm dedication to controlling armament and disarmament.

Legal instruments and their verification mechanisms are the basis for achieving disarmament, strengthening international peace and security, and bringing about social and economic progress. That said, certain disarmament effort have been successful, while the others are progressing at a slower rate, said Minister Jandroković.

As a monitoring country, Croatia supports the activities of the Conference on Disarmament, whose primary role is reaching final agreements on different issues regarding disarmament, which then need to be regulated legally, both in national and international terms.

Expressing belief that nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament should not be the subject of unrealistic demands, Minister Jandroković also touched upon the issue of enlarging the Conference on Disarmament membership.

He said that that had been an issue of great importance to Croatia for almost two decades, adding that the enlargement process should continue and indiscriminately envelop all of the potential new members.

In that regard, Croatia welcomes the activities of the informal group of monitoring countries and the appointment of special coordinator for the enlargement of the Conference on Disarmament.
