In June 2009 the European Council gave its mandate to the European Commission to draft the EU Strategy for the Danube Region by the end of 2010 which should be adopted in the first half of 2011 during the Hungarian presidency over the EU, when its realisation will start. The Republic of Croatia as the EU partner, provided through its active participation from the start its full support for the drafting of the Strategy. The importance of the Danube Strategy for the Republic of Croatia lies in the fact that it will enable the strengthening of bilateral relations with the countries of the region through more intensive trans-border project cooperation. The Strategy provides a new framework for a structured economic cooperation on local and regional levels in the area of the Danube basin. Croatian draft amendments to the Action Plan of the European Commission will be presented on the meeting in Brussels on 22 July 2010.
