Croatian pastoral comedy Plakir, Son of Cupid was featured as part of the York International Shakespeare Festival. Written in 1556 by the Croatian playwright Marin Držić, Plakir (also known as Grižula) predates and shares themes with Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. This is the first full-length English translation. Translated by Filip Krenus, the edition is accompanied by illustrations by Dubravko Kastrapeli. The presentation at the York St John University Creative Centre featured Philip Parr, Director of the Festival and the edition’s editor; Nikša Matić, Director of the House of Marin Držić; and translator Filip Krenus. Both the deputy mayor of Dubrovnik Velibor Puzović and the chargé d’affaires a.i. of the Croatian Embassy Davor Ljubanović addressed the audience. The reading starred Tony Froud, Nick Patrick Jones, Sally Mitcham, Jim Paterson, Matt Pattison, Lara Stafford, and Joy Warner, and was directed by Claire Morley.
