In Aix-en-Provence (France) in September 1971, an international body for Pre-Ottoman and Ottoman studies was founded (Le Comité International d'Etudes Pré-Ottomanes et Ottomanes (CIEPO)), whose board of management, in cooperation with the host country, organises an international scientific congress every other year. Until the present date, these conferences have been held in Sarajevo, Madrid, Tunis, Cambridge, Pecuh, Minneapolis, Jerusalem, Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, Amsterdam, Prague, Vienna, London, Warsaw, Trabzon, and in other cities. At first, the predominant focus of interest for the participants of CIEPO was the economic and social history of the Ottoman Empire, but very soon this included other topics of general and cultural history, language, literature and also the early period of the Republic. Today, thirty-six years after its founding, CIEPO is considered to be one of the most prestigious academic Turkology conferences in the world. Renowned Turkologists and historians from a large number of famous universities and academic institutions take part, which, apart from the presentation of academic papers, includes other forms of presentation (for example, round tables, discussions in specialised academic fields, presentations). The basic condition for participating in the conference is the presentation of an academic paper based on research on primary and secondary sources. The 18th CIEPO will be held in Croatia from 25 to 30 August 2008, at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, University of Zagreb, which is hosting the conference. Its organisers are Prof Nenad Moacanin, DSc, Prof Ekrem Cauševic, DSc, and Vjeran Kursar, MSc. At the 17th CIEPO in Trabzon (September 2006), the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, University of Zagreb (competing with two other international universities) was asked to organise the conference, which in academic circles is considered to be a recognition of the current academic work and results that have been achieved in Ottoman studies and Turkology in Croatia. Although it has a relatively short institutional history, Ottoman studies and Turkology in Croatia has a recognised place on the world map of Turkish studies, and it will be a great stimulus in terms of the subject's development in many areas. A total of 180 participants have registered at this year's symposium in Zagreb. The official languages are English, Turkish, French and German.
