Ambassador Vladimir Drobnjak elected as Vice-President of the ECOSOC
Permanent Representative of the Republic of Croatia to the United Nations in New York, Ambassador Vladimir Drobnjak, was elected as Vice-President of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) at the plenary meeting held on 30 January 2014. Ambassador Drobnjak will perform his duties as Vice-President for the integration segment of ECOSOC during 2014-2015.
The Republic of Croatia was for the first time a member of this important body of the United Nations back in 2000 and during 2002 Croatia chaired the ECOSOC. In October 2012, Croatia was again elected as a member of the Economic and Social Council for the term 2013-2015 which reaffirms Croatia’s international reputation in matters of promotion and realization of economic and social policies that are important for the United Nations.
ECOSOC is the central body of the United Nations for discussion, adoption of guidelines and recommendations, and for the coordination of UN activities in the field of economic, social and related aspects of global development policies, as well as human rights and fundamental freedoms. It is composed of 54 member states of the UN, elected by the General Assembly for a term of three years. The work of ECOSOC is based on the activities of its subsidiary bodies and specialized agencies, funds and programs of the UN. ECOSOC works with more than 3,200 non-governmental organizations.
