Croatian Foreign Minister Zuzul Holds Series of Bilateral Meetings at UN
Croatian Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Miomir Zuzul held a series of bilateral meetings at the U.N. Minister Zuzul met with his counterpart from Luxembourg, Jean Asselborn, Greece, Petros Molyviatis and Serbia-Montenegro, Vuk Draskovic.
Minister Zuzul informed Mr. Asselborn about Croatia’s preparations for the opening of EU accession talks, adding that he expects the negotiations to last for two years, until 2007. Minister Zuzul said that in Croatia there is a consensus in regard to the country’s integration into the EU. Dr. Zuzul informed Foreign Minister Asselborn that the Government of Croatia is cooperating fully with the Hague Criminal Tribunal, which has been confirmed by statements made by Carla del Ponte, the tribunal’s chief prosecutor. Dr. Zuzul also informed his counterpart from Luxembourg about the ways in which the Government is providing support to refugees who wish to return to Croatia, noting that a poor economy and inadequate employment opportunities in many areas are hindering the return process.
Foreign Minister Zuzul met with Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs, Petros Molyviatis, whom he informed about the formation of a Croatian delegation for EU accession negotiations. He thanked Mr. Molyviatis for the support Greece provided Croatia while his country was presiding over the EU presidency. Mr. Molyviatis said that Greece will continue to support Croatia’s membership in the EU, that it believes that the future of all countries of the region is in the EU, and that all countries should be assessed individually according to their respective progress.
Dr. Zuzul also met with Vuk Draskovic, Foreign Minister of Serbia and Montenegro. The two discussed bilateral relations, which they mutually assessed as positive. Croatia and Serbia-Montenegro will continue to have regular diplomatic contacts in order to resolve remaining disputes.
