Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Gordan Jandrokovic received the Ambassador of the Republic of Hungary in the Republic of Croatia Peter Györkös on Wednesday, 17 September 2008. Ambassador Györkös presented the Minister with letter by Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs Kinga Göncz on the ratification of the Protocol on the Enlargement of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization to Croatia.
The Parliament of the Republic of Hungary unanimously ratified the Protocol on 15 September, thus making Hungary the first of 26 NATO member countries to complete the ratification process.
Ambassador Györkös applauded this success and expressed his wish that Croatia would be able to participate in the NATO Summit in Strasbourg and Kehl next year as full NATO member for the first time. He also informed the Minister that all representatives present at the Session of the Hungarian Parliament voted in favour of ratifying the Protocol, and stated that this was a clear message that Croatia was welcome into NATO, after having met membership criteria.
Minister Jandrokovic express thanks to the Republic of Hungary for the ratification, as well as for continued and strong support that Hungary provided to Croatia in the process of accession to Euro-Atlantic integrations. The Minister also took the vote of the Hungarian Parliament as a sign of friendship and partnership of the two neighbouring countries and as recognition of the fact that the Republic of Croatia was ready for an active part in NATO membership.
On the occasion, Minister Jandrokovic said that he expected that all the members would ratify the Protocol until the following summit, celebrating the 60th NATO anniversary.
