Croatian National Theatre Drama in Cyprus

The Croatian National Theatre Drama performed Euripides’ Medea at the 18th International Festival of Ancient Drama in Cyprus. The specific quality of this Festival is that performances are played at authentically preserved ancient theatres. The performance was created in 2012 as a co-production of the Dubrovnik Summer Festival, the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb and Pandur. Theaters. The Cyprus Festival was opened by the performance of Medea on July 4, 2014 at the ancient Odeon in Pafos and a second performance followed on July 6, 2014 at the Makarios Amphitheatre in Nicosia. The lead role was played by Alma Prica. The play was directed by Tomaž Pandur. Euripides’ text was translated by Lada Kaštelan and adapted by Darko Lukic. The performance at Paphos was attended by Giorgos Neophytou, President of the Cyprus Centre of the International Theatre Institute, Marios Ioannou, Artistic Director of Pafos 2017 (European Capital of Culture) and Ivan Velimir Starcevic, Ambassador of Croatia. They took the opportunity for an initial exchange of views about the possibility of Croatian Culture being represendted at Pafos in 2017. The artistic management of the Festival as well as a large audience attending praised the high artistic quality of Medea as performed by the Croatian National Theatre Drama.
