The Embassy of the Republic of Croatia, in partnership with
the Pretoria Art Museum and the Museum Africa, is
organising a flagship exhibition, Contemporary Croatian
Drawing, to be held at the Pretoria Art Museum in Pretoria
from 11 December 2008 to 26 January 2009 and at the Museum
Africa in Johannesburg from 5 February until 1 March 2009.
The exhibition, comprising 140 works of 70 contemporary
Croatian artists, represents the finest works of different
generations of artists, including young up-and-coming artists,
and various trends in modern visual artworks of the 20th and
21st centuries – indeed a wide range and diversity of artistic
expressions.
The exhibition is sponsored by the Ministry of Culture of the
Republic of Croatia which launched the first exhibition in 2005
and has since taken it to 18 countries. It is a significant event
where European and non-European cultures meet, enabling
them to evaluate their own cultures in a broad international
context. Croatia has always been regarded as a Central
European and a Mediterranean country, and has produced
fine artistic works that reflect these cultures, artistic styles
and tendencies. Its artists feature among the most prominent
representatives of these genres.
The interest shown by South Africa in hosting this exhibition
in Pretoria and Johannesburg confirms that we wish to become
acquainted with the Croatian visual art scene and are receptive
to cooperation and the exchange of cultural projects. Fittingly,
this exhibition is held during the UNESCO Decade
of Cultural Diversity and Pluralism.
