Croatian President Stjepan Mesic arrived in Damascus for an official visit during which he discussed bilateral and other issues with his Syrian counterpart Bashar al-Assad.
The two presidents are scheduled to meet at the Presidential Palace. The talks were focused on ways of further promoting bilateral relations, particularly in the economic sector, and on the current situation in the Middle East.
President Mesic visited Syria four years ago as part of a tour of Arab countries. On that occasion he opened the Croatian Consulate and discussed with the Syrian President the need to intensify economic cooperation between the two countries.
After the official part of the visit, President Mesic visited Croatian troops serving in the UN peacekeeping mission on the Golan Heights and spent Christmas with them.
