Upon the invitation extended by General Jean Kahwagi, Supreme Commander of the Lebanese Armed Forces, H.E. Dražen Margeta, Ambassador of the Republic of Croatia in the Republic of Lebanon, with the seat in Cairo, participated on August 1, 2010 in Beirut at the celebration of the 65th anniversary of the Lebanese Armed Forces.
Mr Michel Sleiman, President of the Lebanese Republic, Mr Nahib Berri, President of the Parliament and Mr Saad Hariri, Prime Minister attended the celebration together with, as a guest of honour, H.H. Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, Emir of the State of Qatar. H.H. played a significant role in Doha in 2008, when the Lebanese political leaders concerted the Doha Accord, by which the president-elect Michel Sleiman was by consensus proclaimed as a new head of the Lebanese state and the government of the national unity was established.
In his address to the military forces, the Lebanese President Mr Michel Sleiman invited the Lebanese political leaders and media to refrain from the provocative and sectarian rhetoric and to direct all their efforts to maintain peace in the country. Everybody is aware of his great political responsibility in this delicate political situation which may jeopardize the peace in Lebanon. President Seleiman reconfirmed Lebanon's readiness to continue strengthening its economical, diplomatic (through UN Security Council) and military capacities in the defense of peace. He also upheld the continuation of cooperation between the Lebanese army and the UN Interim Force for Lebanon (UNFIL) in their endeavours aiming to achieve liberation and the return of all territories by available and legitimate means.
