Ivo Josipovic has been sworn in as Croatia's third elected president on February 18, 2010.
At formal inauguration at St. Mark's Square in Zagreb, Josipovic took the oath of office before members of the Constitutional Court.
In his inaugural address, Josipovic said he had run for president with a vision of a European Croatia and promised to support justice. He said: "It is a time when Croatia needs to re-examine itself, a time when each of us should re-examine himself. Courage is necessary to fight injustice and create a better society. I promise you I will be first in that fight and never get tired of it."
He said Croatia needed to produce more to get out of the crisis and pledged to do everything possible to enable Croatia to become an EU member state as soon as possible. In his five-page-long speech, Josipovic thanked President Stjepna Mesic for his work and contributions to Croatian democracy in the last ten years.
He also remembered first Croatian president Franjo Tudman. Josipovic hosted foreign presidents and other high officials at a lunch after the ceremony. Among the guests at the inauguration ceremony were ten presidents, 70 state delegations, and representatives of Croatian political, religious and social circles.
