Delegations of cities of Rijeka, Volos and Mersina presented in Cairo from 15th to 18th 2007 their candidatures for hosting the 17th Mediterranean Games that will be held in 2013. The Croatian delegation comprised of the the representatives of Croatian Olympic Committee headed by COC President Mr. Zlatko Matesa and the delegation of the candidate city of Rijeka, headed by the Mayor of Rijeka Mr. Vojko Obersnel.

Seeking Egyptian support for the Croatian candidature Mr. Matesa pointed out the importance of principle of equality in addressing the candidatures for important sports manifestations whereby equal opportunities should be given to ‘big' and ‘small' nations. Talking on behalf of Croatian Olympic Committee, Mr. Matesa invited Egyptian Olympic Committee to intensify cooperation with Croatian Committee in sports, identifying exchange of the sportsmen and trainers and mutual usage of sports infrastructure existing in both countries as the areas of possible cooperation.
In his intervention, the Mayor of the city of Rijeka, Mr. Obersnel furnished the details on construction of infrastructure needed to host the Mediterranean Games in Rijeka and gave assurances of Rijeka's capability to organize such a mayor manifestation.
