During his bilateral visit to the United States, State Secretary for Political Affairs Davor Božinovic met October 14th 2009 with Deputy Secretary of State James Steinberg. The collocutors expressed satisfaction with the to countries' excellent bilateral relations, pointing out that there are numerous areas of potential cooperation to the interest of both sides. Deputy Secretary of State Steinberg congratulated Croatia on its progress in the past years and expressed support for its European integration process. He added that Croatia's success sends a powerful message to other countries in the region that reforms do pay off. The collocutors also exchanged opinions about the state of affairs in South Eastern Europe, with Deputy Secretary of State Steinberg applauding Croatia's constructive role. He expressed support for the equality of Croats in Bosnia and Herzegovina as one of the three constitutive nations, emphasizing the importance of offering concrete assistance to Bosnia and Herzegovina and other countries in the region on their path to the Euro-Atlantic integration as the best guarantee of lasting stability and prosperity in this part of Europe. State Secretary Božinovic also met with Elizabeth Sherwood-Randall, Senior Director for European Affairs at the National Security Council and special assistant to President Barack Obama, with whom he also exchanged opinions about the situation in the region. The collocutors agreed about the importance of completing the Euro-Atlantic integration process in the region of South Eastern Europe. State Secretary Božinovic also held meeting with Senator George Voinovich and representatives Dennis Kucinich, Peter Visclosky and George Radanovich, who showed great interest in the state of affairs in the region and expressed strong support for Croatia on its path to the European Union.
