The Model Council of the European Union debate for secondary schools took place on Friday, 10 March 2017 in Dublin Castle. The debate, which has been organised by the European Commission Representation in Ireland, is a simulation of a meeting of the Council of the European Union and involves teams from 28 Irish secondary schools, each of which represents an EU Member State.
The event was formally opened by the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade of Ireland, Charlie Flanagan TD. The theme of this year"s debate was the EU"s international trade agreements – good for European citizens and business. A team of three students from each participating school represented the minister for trade from one of the 28 EU Member States. Croatia was represented by three students form Mercy College, Sligo.
The winning team was invited to bring their classmates and teacher to Strasbourg in France to take part in the European Parliament"s Euroscola project. This project allows students from the EU"s 28 Member States to work together for a day, just as the MEPs would in the European Parliament.
Ivan Mašina, Ambassador of Croatia to Ireland, attended the debate and met the team. He also presented students with the materials on Croatia and souvenirs
