Ireland has assumed the Presidency of the European Union on Thursday, 1 January 2004 with a ceremony in Dublin Castle where the European Union''s and the Irish flags were raised. The Croatian Ambassador to Ireland Dr Nenad Prelog attended the event. The Taoiseach, Mr Bertie Ahern TD pointed out in his speech at the ceremony that the agenda of the Irish Presidency is demanding as well as complex and would involve efforts to make progress on a range of issues including the negotiations on the EU Constitutional Treaty, Europe''s foreign relations, and the enlargement of the European Union on 1 May 2004.
