Galway 2020 and “My Galway My Culture" photo competition

The photo exhibition "My Glaway My Culture" organized by Galway 2020 - European Capital of Culture Candidate City - Glaway Bid Team and the Connacht Tribune was opened in Galway on 1st October 2015. The exhibition officially marked the end of a two-month photography competition where inhabitants showed what culture meant to them. The author of the best photograph was announced at the reception and won a week’s holiday for two in Croatia. The organizers opted for Croatia as the first prize due to the Decision of the European Parliament and Council of 16 April 2014 according to which, for the first time after the initiative was adopted in 1985, a Croatian and an Irish city will host the event together and hold the title of the European Capital of Culture 2020. The cities presenting their candidacy in Ireland were Dublin, Galway and Limerick and three Irish cities, Kilkenny, Waterford and Wexford as a common, unique micro-region candidacy. The exhibition opening ceremony, followed by the reception at the premises of the The Print Works at the Connacht Tribune, was attended by the Mayor of Galway, Mr. Frank Fahy, other councilors, cultural workers, citizens and amateur photographers. On behalf of the Croatian Embassy in Dublin, Ms. Anamarija Džidic addressed the audience and emphasized the long and friendly relations between Ireland and Croatia in sharing a similar history, culture and belonging to Europe. Ms. Džidic pointed out the specific characteristics and advantages of the continental and Mediterranean parts of the Croatian candidate cities and expressing the wish for even better cultural cooperation between Ireland and Croatia.
