On 23 January 2026, State Secretary for Political Affairs Frano Matušić received the Ambassador of Ethiopia to the Republic of Croatia (accredited to Rome), H.E. Demitu Hambisa Bonsa.

Priority issues for strengthening relations between the two countries were discussed. The recently signed Memorandum of Understanding on Political Consultations - the first intergovernmental agreement between the two states - enablees more intensive political cooperation and provides a basis for further engagement in the fields of economy, investment, agriculture, education, and tourism. To this end, a meeting was also held with the Director-General for Economic Affairs and Development Cooperation, Irena Alajbeg.

In addition to the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, the ambassador was also received at the Ministry of Science, Education and Youth, where further steps were agreed regarding scholarships and cooperation in higher education, as well as at the Croatian Chamber of Economy. Ethiopia, with a population of 110 million, represents a highly important market, with economic growth reaching 7.4% last year.

It was agreed that political consultations will be held in March this year in Zagreb, at which concrete projects of intergovernmental cooperation in the aforementioned sectors will be agreed.
