Schengen Information System (SIS)
By virtue of the Regulations of the European Parliament and of the Council (2018/1860, 2018/1861 and 2018/1862) on the establishment, operation, and use of the Schengen Information System (SIS) in the fields of return of illegally staying third-country nationals, border checks, and police and judicial cooperation in criminal matters, a unified information system has been established, enabling competent national authorities in the Member States of the Schengen area to cooperate in the exchange of data, and allowing police, judicial, and other authorities with access rights to enter and search alerts on missing persons, on persons and objects related to criminal offenses, and on third-country nationals who are not allowed to enter or stay in the Schengen area.
The abovementioned Regulations guarantee each subject whose data is processed in the SIS the right to access personal data, the right to rectify personal data, and the right to erase personal data, except where such processing is undertaken by competent national authorities for the purposes of preventing, investigating, detecting or prosecuting terrorist offences or other serious criminal offences.
