Support for further enlargement

The Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs welcomes recommendations from the European Commission’s enlargement strategy and the annual progress reports for the countries of the Western Balkans and Turkey, published 16 October.

We find it important that the documents clearly indicate that all the countries have a European prospect and that the enlargement policy influences the transformation of transition countries.

Croatia, as a new EU member and a country with the most recent negotiations experience, proves by its own example that the effort put into reforms and the negotiation process pays off because it was done for the benefit of the citizens and the state.

We will, therefore, continue to support the efforts of all the countries, candidates and aspirants alike, as well as offer them assistance along their road to EU membership, as only a stable and secure region, based on the European values of the rule of law, democracy and market economy can bring prosperity to Southeast Europe and the EU as a whole.

We applaud the progress each of the countries has made and call on them to double their efforts. Meeting the European criteria at every leg of the way to EU membership is a step closer to functional state institutions, before which every citizen has equal rights and duties.
