State Secretary for Europe Andreja Metelko-Zgombić on Wednesday participated in a virtual ministerial meeting of the Global Summit of Women, dedicated to further realization of the comprehensive platform on gender equality adopted at the Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing. The female ministers of the UN member states were invited to present national project on women’s rights within the Bejing+25 framework.

Metelko-Zgombić presented the project by the Croatian Ministry of Labour, Pension System, Family and Social Policy titled “Make a Wish – Women Employment Programme”, chosen as one of the best projects on said topic.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Global Summit of Women and the 25th anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this was the first virtual summit and the first summit open to the public.

To date, “Make a Wish” employed 6,000 disadvantaged women to care for and assist 30,000 elderly and disadvantaged persons, mainly in rural areas and on the islands. Metelko-Zgombić underscored that said project contributed to women employment and improving the quality of life for elderly and/or disadvantaged persons, while at the same time helping reduce poverty and social exclusion.
