State Secretary Andreja Metelko-Zgombić in Brussels attended a meeting of the General Affairs Council on the annual rule of law dialogue and the Conference on the Future of Europe.

In the framework of the annual rule of law dialogue, the participants discussed the situation with regard to the rule of law in Luxembourg, Hungary, Malta, the Netherlands and Austria. Metelko-Zgombić welcomed the exchange of views and experiences in this format, which has proven to be a successful framework for an informal, open and constructive dialogue on the rule of law in the EU member states. Although they have different legislative and institutional setups, as well as legal and political traditions, the member states often share the same challenges when it comes to areas covered by the Commission’s Annual Report. There is always room for improvement and these exchanges of views and best practices, in a positive atmosphere and respecting the equality of the member states, will certainly help.

Following last week’s plenary meeting of the Conference on the Future of Europe, the General Affairs Council took stock of the ongoing work of the Conference and exchanged views on the next steps. The Conference participants will have to come to a consensus on the consolidated version of the proposals at the plenary meeting on 29 and 30 April. Metelko-Zgombić underscored the importance of accurate and balanced presentation of ideas and preoccupations of European citizens in the Conference’s final report, expressing satisfaction with the engagement of the Croatian citizens.

The state secretary also attended an informal lunch of “Ministers for the Future” with EC Vice-President Maroš Šefčovič, who presented the preparations of this year’s Strategic Foresight Report, expected to be published in June, with an emphasis on the links between green and digital transition, as well as the long-term implications of the Russian aggression against Ukraine.
