Pusić delivered lecture at EU public debate in Čakovec

Pusić expressed satisfaction with the young people’s interest in the European Union, stressing it was precisely them that would benefit from its membership the most

The debate was attended by 500 odd citizens of Čakovec, mostly high school and university students. Pusić expressed satisfaction with the young people’s interest in the European Union, stressing it was precisely them that would benefit from its membership the most.

The minister pointed out that, having closed the negotiations, Croatia had entered a new phase of development and that we had to recognize and take the opportunities offered by the membership. She recalled that for Croatia the accession process had been a process of state building during which we had acquired knowledge and experience we could use to position ourselves in the region and within the Union.

As an important element for Croatia she underlined the universal European values, notably the balance between conflict and solidarity. It is precisely this balance, Pusić said, that is the precondition for a healthy society, and on it Croatia has to build not only internal relations, but relations with countries in the region as well. She said the universal European values should not be taken for granted, but had to be fought for, on equal terms with other member-countries.

At the end of the lecture, Pusić answered questions from the audience.
