(Hina) - The Croatian First Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign and European Affairs Minister, Vesna Pusić, is confident that the annual conference of ILGA-Europe, the umbrella organisation of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and intersex community of Europe, which started in Zagreb on Thursday, will help people in Croatia become more determined in fighting discrimination against members of the LGBTI community, as well as discrimination in general.

"I am confident this conference will help people in our society become more determined in fighting discrimination against members of the LGBTI community, but also in fighting discrimination... and I hope that this will spread to other countries in the region (Southeast Europe)," Pusić said in her speech at the opening of the ILGA-Europe meeting.

"It is important to clearly say to people: the minute you allow one criterion for discriminating against people, deny them equal status, equal rights and equal access, you have opened the door to discrimination as modus operandi, discrimination as the way a society functions and it is only a matter of time when this will affect you personally. Because if you think about it, each of us represents a minority based on some criteria," Pusić said.

She expressed satisfaction with Croatia's annual Pride parades.

Some 400 organisations from 45 countries are gathered around ILGA-Europe.
