Pursuant to former SFRY Succession Agreement, MFAEI commission took over building of SFRY former embassy in Vienna

The 892-square-meter building is a protected cultural monument and is situated near numerous other embassies. The building, after interior refurbishment, will be used by the Republic of Croatia for its own purposes, in view of the obligation to hand over the current embassy building (former SFRY residence, temporarily owned by the Republic of Croatia) to Bosnia and Herzegovina. The building came with six works of art by Croatian and 13 by foreign authors.

This represents the continuation of the process of taking over real estate of the diplomatic and consular representations of the former SFRY, pursuant to the 2006 resolution by the Joint Succession Committee allotting 44 pieces of real estate from the so-called “OECD region”, of which Croatia is to assume 10.

The agreement reached at the meeting of the Joint Succession Committee in May this year, held after a short delay in the negotiations, determined the timeframe for taking over the 10 pieces of real estate, which were or largely still are owned by the Republic of Serbia.

Apart from the two Trieste apartments taken over early-July this year and the embassy in Vienna yesterday, Croatia is to assume ownership of four more pieces of real estate by the end of the year (the embassy building in Lisbon, and residences in Madrid, Oslo and Helsinki).

The remaining three pieces of real estate will be handed over to Croatia no later than 31 August 2012 (embassy building in The Hague, consulate general in Toronto and residence in Stockholm).

The next meeting of the Joint Succession Committee is scheduled for September in Sarajevo and should carry on the negotiations on further allotment negotiations. The Republic of Croatia will continue to put forth efforts to speed up the process of succession and apportionment of the diplomatic and consular property of the former SFRY, in accordance with the agreed principles and agreement between all of the successive counties.
