Ninth International Conference on Export of Military and Dual-Use Goods opened in Cavtat

Opening speeches were held by Multilateral Relations Director Mario Nobilo, US Ambassador to Croatia Robert A. Bradtke, Minister Advisor Vladimir Matek, and US Deputy Assistant Secretary for International Security and Nonproliferation C. S. Eliot Kang.

In his speech, Director Nobilo said that globalism brings progress, but also challenges and threats such as terrorism, organized crime, and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. In that sense, he pointed out the importance of continuous cooperation of all countries in combating those threats.

Director Nobilo also emphasized Croatia’s active role in promoting international security, namely as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, where it was recognized as a responsible and reliable partner, significantly contributing to finding the solutions to global issues. He said Croatia is successfully presiding over the Counter-Terrorist Committee and actively contributing to other UN bodies as well. Croatia has grown from a topic of the UN discussions and an international aid recipient to a country actively participating in building a lasting peace and stability and taking part in 13 UN peacekeeping missions.

Ambassador Bradtke pointed out the excellent cooperation between the US and Croatia is monitoring the export of military and dual-use goods, as well as Croatia’s important role as a non-permanent member of the Security Council in combating global threats. He said that only though a joint effort of all the countries in the world can its citizens be ensured a life in peace and security.

The Conference attracted about 200 senior officials, experts and representatives of 65 countries, including representatives of many international nongovernmental organisations, who in the next two day will exchange experiences related to global trends, as well as challenges in the control of exported goods and border security.

Choosing Croatia to host a conference dealing with global issues of arms and dual-use exports is an important recognition for Croatia’s achievements and progress in that area. Croatia’s strategy is based on the European standards, and is constantly being perfected and strengthened, both in terms of law regulations and the institutions implementing it, as well as in their cooperation. An important part in that process is played by the partnership relations with the US.
