Morinj memorial an important step in strengthening relations, building bridges, facing the past

The recent politicizing and announcement of removal of the Morinj camp memorial plaque, unveiled by Montenegro’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Defence on 10 December 2022, should not discourage Montenegrin Croats. Montenegro’s then-ministers Krivokapić and Konjević provided arguments that all legal requirements for putting up the plaque had been met. The event was a continuation of last year’s commemoration, when Grlić Radman and Montenegro’s then-minister Radulović jointly marked the 30th anniversary of Morinj camp.
 
We welcome this year’s initiative to put up the plaque, which is an important step forward in strengthening good neighbourly relations, building bridges of friendship and facing the past. Is it also a civilizational act and a cultural gesture, as well as the right way towards the European family that Montenegro belongs to. In line with universal values, it is a clear signpost for strengthening Montenegro’s European perspective as well as the application of European values and principles of international conventions. It is also an important act of admitting the crimes committed against the Croatian people in the name of the aggressor.
 
President of the Croatian Civil Initiative Adrijan Vuksanović decided to resign as minister and not be a member of Montenegro’s caretaker government, stating that honouring the victims of war was more important than privileges.
