Ministry hosts meeting on stronger participation of women in economy and politics

Assistant Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Vesna Batistić Kos 3 June held a coordinating interdepartmental meeting on Croatia’s participation in the Equal Futures Partnership initiative. The goal of the initiative is to promote a more prominent role of women in two crucial and interrelated fields where there is continually less women than men in nearly all of the countries in the world – politics and economy.

The initiative was launched by the US. At its meeting in June 2012, on the fringes of the UN General Assembly session in New York, First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Vesna Pusić announced Croatia’s accession to the initiatives as well as our participation in the partnership network of countries guaranteeing on the highest political level the implementation of programmes and projects aimed at strengthening the status and role of women in the world.

Croatia officially joined the Equal Futures Partnership initiative 18 April 2013 in Washington, on the margins of the World Bank spring session, whereby the 2013-2014 National Plan was presented, containing four key areas in which women empowerment measures are to be implemented: 1) promoting a stronger participation of women in politics, 2) strengthening the social and economic status and role of women in rural areas, 3) strengthening women’s entrepreneurship and companies as well as improving their access to job market, 4) international women empowerment activities.

Today’s interdepartmental meeting reviewed the implementation of Croatia’s National Plan, taking part in which are the Government Office for Gender Equality, Office for Human and National Minority Rights, Ministry of Defence, Ministry of the Interior, Ministry of Entrepreneurship and Crafts, Ministry of Labour and Pension System, Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Social Policy and Youth, Ministry of Public Administration, Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Regional Development and EU Funds, Ministry of Science, Education and Sports, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Finance and Office of the Ombudswoman for Gender Equality. Coordinating activities involve non-governmental organizations and institutions – the Centre for Women’s Studies, Croatian Businesswomen Association “Krug” (Circle), Centre for Education, Counselling and Research (CESI) and Zagreb Institute for Social Research.
