The first item on the agenda was information about Croatia’s EU accession, as part of which Minister Pusić addressed the councillors. “The referendum on Croatia’s accession is a crucial moment for all of us, in a lot of way similar to when we decided on our country’s independence. Many will say that everything is already settled and that there is no need to vote at the referendum, but that is not true. The way we decide on Sunday is that way that it shall be, nothing is settled yet”, said Pusić in her address. She informed the councillors and the Varaždin public about the preparations for the Sunday referendum and the significance of the moment Croatia is in. It was the first time a minister of the new government attended a session of the Varaždin County Assembly.

Minister Pusić also pointed out that the referendum came down to deciding on the stability of Croatia and its institutions. “For Croatia, the greatest advantage of joining the EU is political and economic stability. Then come using the EU funds, judiciary reform, and agriculture based not only on incentives but on renewable energy, environmental protection and rural development funds as well. All of these things are subject to change and adjustment. All of that is live matter. While stability is something firm and lasting”, said Pusić.

She added that the latest polls showed that about 60% of the citizens were in favour of the EU, pointing out the importance of the citizens’ going to the referendum in the largest number possible.

She commended the Varaždin County and the northwest Croatia for being among the best when it came to using the means from the European funds.

After the address, the minister together with President of the Varaždin County Assembly Dubravka Biberdžić, County Head Predrag Štromar and Chair of the European Integration Council Natalija Martinčević visited the information stand in the Franjevački Square, where promotional material, brochures, leaflets and other publications of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs and the EU Delegation were being distributed.
