The inaugural mass by Pope Francis in the St. Peter's Square was attended by dignitaries from 132 countries and officials of the greatest world religions. The Croatian delegation, headed by President Ivo Josipović, also included First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Vesna Pusić.

“There was a special atmosphere about it. The word ‘pope’ was not even mentioned, as Pope Francis speaks of himself as a Roman bishop and insists on return to humility as a virtue,” Pusić said.

In a brief sermon Pope Francis underlined once again the need to look after the poor and the sick. “The true power of the pope is in humble and concrete serving,” he said, calling on the religious not to be afraid of gentleness.

Around one million people gathered in Vatican’s central St. Peter's Square, which is the largest number since the beatification of the late Pope John Paul II on 1 May, 2011 when 1.5 million people attended.
