Pending the signing of Croatia’s NATO accession protocol, Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Gordan Jandroković sent a letter to NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, in which he confirms Croatia’s interest to join the North Atlantic Alliance.

In the letter, Minister Jandroković said that by joining NATO, Croatia wishes to the strengthening of its own security, as well as the security of its allies and the entire Euro-Atlantic area. Croatia embraces the basic principles of the alliance and is committed to protecting freedom, democracy and the rule of law.

Along with the letter, Croatia also submitted a timetable for the completion of the ongoing reforms, drawn up after the successful completion of the NATO accession negotiations, and following the invitation by NATO members’ heads of state and governments issued at the Bucharest Summit in April.

It is expected that the members’ permanent representatives to NATO will in the presence of Croatian officials sign the protocol on Croatia's admission to the Alliance at the session of the North Atlantic Council, to be held 9 July in Brussels. After the ratification of the accession protocol by the member countries, Croatia will at the invitations by the Secretary General become a full member of the Alliance.
