Minister Jandroković stressed that the Republic of Croatia appreciated the assistance and contribution of the Council of Europe in the area of protection of human rights and on the establishment of a society based on democracy and rule of law. He also said that this visit of Commissioner Hammarberg represented an opportunity to make additional progress through dialogue and joint cooperation. At their meeting they also discussed the issue of return of refugees and displaced persons, and the reconstruction and housing processes. Another topic was the protection of rights of national minorities, in particular members of the Roma national minority.

Minister Jandroković mentioned that, at the end of the previous month, he had participated at the international conference “Permanent Solutions for Refugees and Displaced Persons – cooperation between countries in the region” which took place in Belgrade. The achievements of the Republic of Croatia in the implementation of the programme for refugees and displaced persons were presented on that occasion.

While discussing the Croatian accession negotiations for membership of the European Union, Minister Jandroković said that they were in their final stage and he expressed his deepest conviction that they will be completed by the end of this year. He said that continous efforts have been invested into the fulfilment of all obligations for the most demanding areas, such as those covered by Chapter 23 Judiciary and Fundamental Rights.

At the meeting they also discussed the situation in the South East Europe. Both parties expressed their support for Euro-integration processes in the remaining countries and insisted on the fact that their membership of the European Union is a guarantee for stability and prosperity of the entire region.
