Minister Grlić Radman visits Malta

On Wednesday, June 19, 2024, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Gordan Grlić Radman met with President of the Republic of Malta Myriam Spiteri Debono and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Ian Borg, on the sidelines of the signing ceremony of the United Nations Convention on the International Effects of Judicial Sales of Ships (Beijing Convention) in Valletta.
 
The minister expressed satisfaction with the excellent bilateral relations and regular high-level meetings. He congratulated Malta on the significant anniversaries it is celebrating this year: 20 years of EU membership, 50 years of the Republic's existence, and 60 years of Maltese independence. He emphasized that there is significant room for intensifying cooperation bilaterally and in a broader context, especially in the Mediterranean region, as well as in the areas of environmental protection and the preservation of sustainability in the Mediterranean, tourism, and culture.
 
Both countries expressed interest in further strengthening economic cooperation, which has great potential in various sectors.
 
In the European context, the alignment of positions on EU enlargement policy was confirmed, with Malta highlighting its continuous support for EU enlargement based on achievements. The discussions also covered EU priorities in the next institutional cycle, including the issue of access to external border protection, which is of particular interest to both countries.
 
Croatia and Malta also cooperate excellently on the multilateral level, especially within the UN, where Malta currently holds the important role of a non-permanent member of the Security Council. Grlić Radman also welcomed all activities led by Malta in its role as the chair of the OSCE.
 
Opinions were exchanged on global crises and wars. Following the International Peace Conference on Ukraine in Switzerland, the ministers agreed on the importance of the international community maintaining its focus on Ukraine and providing it with strong support. Regarding the situation in Gaza and the Middle East, the urgent need for political solutions was emphasized.
