Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Gordan Grlić Radman on Friday received an official visit from San Marino’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Economic Cooperation and Telecommunications, Luca Beccari.

The two ministers underscored satisfaction with their countries’ bilateral relations, which are built on strong historic ties – according to legend, San Marino was founded by Saint Marinus from the island of Rab. On 22 June 1968, San Marino twinned with the City of Rab. The charter was renewed in 2018 to commemorate its 50th anniversary.

Grlić Radman and Beccari underlined that Croatia and San Marino had no outstanding issues, expressing desire to further strengthen the cooperation in areas of mutual interest and reiterating the two countries’ commitment to the strategy and goals of the Adriatic-Ionian Initiative. San Marino joined the Initiative in 2019, with Croatia’s full support.

Grlić Radman thanked Beccari for the concrete help his country had sent to the quake-hit Sisak-Moslavina County, which included a container home and a financial donation from San Marino’s citizens.

In the context of the EU Association Agreement, which San Marino is implementing together with Andora and Monaco, Grlić Radman stressed Croatia’s support for continued talks and expressed hope in their successful conclusion. The two ministers agreed that the fact that San Marino was not an EU member state made the country’s economic and health situation more difficult, as it had no access to European funds, notably the Next Generation EU programme.
