Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Gordan Grlić Radman on Wednesday participated in the third international aid conference for Lebanon, held online exactly one year after the Beirut port explosion. The conference was chaired by French President Emmanuel Macron and held under the auspices of the UN, with the participation of many heads of state or government, cabinet ministers, heads of international institutions and civil society organisations.

In his address, Grlić Radman welcomed the high-level conference, underscoring that after the Beirut blast the Croatian government had sent emergency relief in the form of personal protection equipment as well as humanitarian and development aid through the World Food Programme and the UN Development Programme. He recalled that Croatia had assisted earlier with development aid projects for Syrian refugees accommodated in Lebanon, with an emphasis on women’s empowerment and children’s education.

The participants called for an urgent formation of a stable and functioning government that would implement the necessary reforms towards Lebanon’s social and economic recovery after years of social and economic crisis, made worse by the COVID-19 pandemic. The EU has so far raised €170 million in response to the emergency needs following last year’s explosion.
