Minister Grlić Radman attends ministerial meeting on Afghanistan

Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Gordan Grlić Radman on Monday attended a ministerial meeting on Afghanistan as part of the 76th UN General Assembly. The meeting focused on maintaining the achievements of the international engagement in the country over the past 20 years, with emphasis on encouraging the prospects of women and girls and ensuring their access to education.

“Afghanistan has come a long way in the last two decades and made progress with help from the international community. It is extremely important that these hard-earned achievements be maintained in the current situation. This especially goes for the rights of Afghan women and girls,” Grlić Radman underscored in his address.

The minister said that Croatia had implemented more than 70 development and humanitarian projects in Afghanistan – in education, healthcare and business opportunities for women. The majority of the projects were aimed at strengthening the social status of women. The presence of Croatian women diplomats contributed to a better understanding of the needs of Afghan women and to greater efficiency in project implementation.

“I believe we all agree that Afghanistan needs our continued commitment and assistance as well as support in recovery,” Grlić Radman said and called on the new Afghan government to ensure respect for fundamental human rights, including the rights of women and girls.

“Together with its partners and allies, Croatia will continue to encourage Afghanistan to honour the international commitments undertaken by previous governments, which should lead to a renewed commitment from the international community and support to the Afghan people in using the chance for a better future,” the minister concluded.
