Minister Grlić Radman attends meeting of NATO foreign ministers

Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Gordan Grlić Radman attended a meeting of the foreign ministers of NATO member states, held on 30 November and 1 December 2021 in Riga.

The ministers reflected on the topical security challenges in Europe – the situation on the Ukrainian border and in the Dead Sea region, as well as the artificially caused migrant crisis that Belarus is threatening its allies Poland, Lithuania and Latvia with. During the talks with the foreign ministers of Ukraine and Georgia, the ministers reiterated NATO’s strong support for the two countries’ territorial integrity and sovereignty, underscoring readiness to step up assistance in implementing the reforms required for NATO membership. The ministers also commented on the key elements of the future Strategic Concept, which is expected to be adopted at the NATO summit in June. In addition, the ministers discussed the lessons learned from NATO’s 20-year-long engagement in Afghanistan and reflected on the Western Balkans with the foreign ministers of Finland and Sweden, together with High Representative Borrell.

Grlić Radman underlined the strategic importance of the Western Balkans for NATO. The minister advocated stepping up EU and NATO’s support to Bosnia and Herzegovina, notably concerning electoral reform to ensure legitimate representation of all three constituent peoples.
