Minister Grabar-Kitarović met with EU Special Representative to Afghanistan Francesc Vendrell and CFC Commander, US Gen. Karl Eikenberry

Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović, during her two-day official visit to the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, met on Friday, 21 April 2006, with EU Special Representative to Afghanistan Francesc Vendrell and US General Karl Eikenberry, Commander of the Combined Forces Command (CFC)

The two commended Croatia’s contribution so far to the stabilisation of the situation in Afghanistan and invited Croatia to continue with its engagement in the NATO-ed ISAF peace-keeping forces.

Minister Grabar-Kitarović informed them about Croatia’s contribution so far to the military, police, and diplomatic component of ISAF, in which the Croatian contingent is taking part since 2003, announcing its increase from 50 to 150 soldiers and other personnel.

Gen. Wilson and EU Representative Vendrell familiarised the Croatian minister with the plans to expand the NATO mandate in Afghanistan and its joining with the coalition forces’ operation, with the antiterrorist operations remaining within the US forces’ domain.

On Friday, before leaving Afghanistan, Minister Grabar-Kitarović also visited the Greek ISAF military hospital at the Kabul international airport Kaia, where the Croatian sanitary team is operating.
