Republic of Croatia has forwarded to UNESCO headquarters its nominations for UNESCO Memory of the World Register.
Within the UNESCO-initiated Proclamation of Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage Croatia has nominated the Istrian scale under the title Istrian Ethnomusic Microcosm. The nomination has been prepared by the Ministry of Culture in conjunction with the Istria County Administration for Culture and Education.
The second nomination, within the UNESCO Memory of the World Register Programme, is the Croatian Glagolitic Heritage, prepared by the Croatian State Archive in co-operation with the Old Slavonic Institute – Department for Glagolitic Script.
A precondition for nominating the masterpieces of intangible heritage within the UNESCO initiative was to set up a national council for intangible heritage which, inter alia, is supposed to cultivate the phenomenon. Thus the Council for the Croatian Intangible Heritage has been formed within the Ministry of Culture.
A final decision on the said nominations is expected from UNESCO headquarters in the second half of 2003.
