Late in the afternoon on Friday, February 24, 2003, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Croatia, Tonino Picula, received a delegation from Rijeka headed by its Mayor, Vojko Obersnel, for a working meeting concerning the joint promotion activities related to the candidacy of the city of Rijeka for the organisation of the XVI Mediterranean Games in 2009.

The delegation included Mr. Luciano Sušanj, Deputy Mayor of Rijeka; Mr. Mihovil Dorčić, Head of the City Department for Sport and Technical Culture; Mr. Ivica Vidović, Director of McCann Erickson Croatia, and the meeting was attended by the president of the Croatian Olympic Committee, Mr. Zlatko Mateša.

After the members of the delegation presented the preparations for the candidacy and the course of the candidacy procedure in detail, Minister Picula expressed his satisfaction with what has been done so far and stressed that he would fully support the candidacy for this important sports and political event. Minister Picula said he would, through his personal effort and the network of the Croatian diplomatic missions abroad, contribute to the promotion of the candidacy of the City of Rijeka and Croatia on behalf of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Croatia.
