International Day in Support of Victims of Torture

People are still being tortured throughout the world because of their political beliefs, associations, public actions, because they are different and belong to a national, religious or ethnic minority, or because of their sexual orientation and gender identity

People are still being tortured throughout the world because of their political beliefs, associations, public actions, because they are different and belong to a national, religious or ethnic minority, or because of their sexual orientation and gender identity.  Torture represents the worst kind of human rights violation and such crimes cannot go unpunished.

Croatia is implementing the UN Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment and respects the General Assembly and Human Rights Council resolutions on the importance of security, justice, compensation and support for the victims.

Croatia will continue to promote the prevention and abolishment of torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment as well as support the efforts of the UN, Council of Europe and OSCE in combating this crime against humanity.

In commemoration of the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs underlines the actions of CSOs and human rights advocates in preventing torture and degrading treatment and participates in the international community’s efforts to facilitate and support their work.
