International community celebrates the 10 December as the Human Rights Day...

Each year, the international community celebrates the 10 December as the Human Rights Day. Several significant events in the field of human rights are related to this day.

In 1948, the General Declaration on Human Rights was adopted, and in 1993, the Vienna Declaration and the Action Programme were adopted at the World Conference on Human Rights. On this day ten years ago, the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights was established.

The Universal Declaration on Human Rights occupies a key place in human history. Its adoption 55 years ago contributed to strong development of international law on human rights and joint standards recognising equal and inalienable rights to all people and every human being were adopted. Today, human rights are enshrined in the efforts of the UN and its Member States in the field of peace, humanitarian assistance, sustainable development and social and economic progress.

The Republic of Croatia has accepted all basic international instruments in the field of human rights. In 2003, Croatia has signed the Additional Protocol with the UN Convention Against Torture, the Convention on Human Rights and Biomedicine and the Additional Protocols on the Ban of Cloning and Transplantation of Organs and Tissues.

In cooperation with the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, a Human Rights Centre has been established and is to systematically strengthen activities on the promotion and protection of human rights.

The protection and the promotion of human rights are integrated in the principles of the Croatian foreign policy. Croatia represents such policy in global and regional bodies, as well as in bilateral contacts with other states.
