In response to open letter by Center for Peace Studies regarding implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1869 (2008)

In response to yesterday’s open letter by the Center for Peace Studies to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration regarding the implementation of the UN Security Council Resolution 1869 (2008), we would like to state the following

Firstly, we would like to point out that the Ministry appreciates the activities and efforts of the Center for Peace Studies, especially in the protection and promotion of human rights.

We would like to emphasize that Croatia has actively participated in the preparation and passing of resolutions 1850 (2008) and 1860 (2009), as well as the previously-adopted Security Council Press Statement that Croatia’s Permanent Representative to the UN Neven Jurica, as the Council’s Chairman, read on December 27th 2008.

Currently underway is a series of diplomatic initiatives for the prevention of conflicts and ensuring the implementation of Resolution 1860 (2009). One of these initiatives if the ongoing visit by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to the Gaza Strip and Israel, as well as to the countries of the region. At the Security Council closed consultations on January 13th 2009, Croatia lent its full support to the Secretary General’s initiative, who on January 15th 2009 in Jerusalem said he was moderately optimistic and that several days would be required to work out the technical details of the truce in the Gaza Strip.

The Republic of Croatia will continue to constructively contribute to the prevention of conflicts, establishment of a sustainable peace and reopening of political negotiations, as well as ensuring the deliverance of humanitarian aid.
